Due to the tremendous ecological and economic impact that many species of Caulerpa can have if released into the wild, it is imperative that future infestations be prevented and that existing infestations in the wild be found before they spread to a size too big to eradicate.
One important element of prevention is the ban on the sale of nine species of Caulerpa by pet shops and online retailers. To see pictures of the nine banned species click here. By reporting retailers or Web sites that offer these species for sale in California, you are being a responsible aquarist and good environmental steward. Reports are anonymous and will be followed up on by wardens from the California Department of Fish and Game.

Existing infestations are most likely to be discovered by SCUBA divers, but may also be detected by boaters or anglers. Caulerpa grows on the sea floor, not on docks or piers, and only in saltwater. In California, Caulerpa taxifolia has been observed growing in depths from approximately two to 15 feet of water; however, it is likely that it could survive in much deeper water. In the Mediterranean Sea, it has been found at depths of over 150 feet. Anglers might pull up a piece of Caulerpa on their line and boaters might find Caulerpa hooked to their anchor.
If you think you have found Caulerpa while diving or boating, please collect a piece and place it between sheets of damp newspaper in a bag and/or take a photo. Please note all possible geographic information that will assist us in revisiting the site. If possible, use a GPS to mark the location.
